From that, 39 players had at least one article written about them that references their English-proficiency. Once those players were determined, a Google and NewsBank search was conducted with the name of the player and a search term regarding their English ability. For a player to be eligible for this study, they must have debuted during or before the 2018 season and speak enough English to hold an interview. Since the Latino influence is large, the purpose of this textual analysis is to determine how mainstream media frame the English-proficiency of Latin American MLB players. As of Opening Day 2019, 26.5 percent of MLB was from a Latin American country.
Latin American players comprise of a large portion of Major League Baseball (MLB). Overall, the data suggest that the NFL has largely sought talent irrespective of race and hold the promise that highly motivated institutions in other fields can move beyond race in hiring decisions. The data also show that the selection of prospective quarterbacks follows a very different pattern, with clear evidence that the NFL was unable or unwilling to competently evaluate African-American quarterbacks in the 1960s and 1970s, but that in more recent decades NFL drafts have more successfully evaluated prospective African-American QBs than White quarterbacks. Rather than a system infected by bias, the data reveal that the NFL is almost equally successful in efficiently selecting White and African-American players. Data on NFL drafts between 19 are analyzed to offer a unique means of testing if the selection process has been skewed by race.

Research on the NFL variously finds evidence that the player evaluation process is rife with racial stereotypes or that the evaluation of players is performance driven and largely free of bias. In our discussion we place these results within the larger societal and historical context. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of ten broadcasts of televised post-match Spanish football commentary, using an in-depth qualitative approach. This, combined with the large audiences that televised football attracts, may contribute to the (re)production of racialized discourses.
